How Buns Can Improve The Taste Of Your Hot Dog

A lot of hot dog enthusiasts make sure to buy the best meat so they can cook a great hot dog, but forget to worry about the hot dog buns. When you don't have the right hot dog buns, your hot dogs will never taste as good as they could.

Choose the Right Buns

Don't use a hot dog bun that is too firm because your hot dog isn't a hoagie. Don't use a flatbread because it'll end up feeling more like a sandwich. Instead, the hot dog bun needs to be soft and the same length as the hot dog, or maybe a little smaller with the hot dog sticking out.

When you get a hot dog bun that is much bigger than the hot dog, you might reach a point where there's only a bun left. You'll either waste the bun or have to eat a bun without a hot dog, which isn't as fun.

The best hot dog buns come with poppy seeds. The best hot dogs are meant to be messy and getting poppy seeds all over the place is part of the experience.

Don't Keep Them for Too Long

Sometimes you can't find the right hot dog bun in your area, so there's no shame in ordering some online. Just make sure to time it right so that the hot dog buns arrive on time. Don't place the buns in the freezer if you need more time because they won't be the same after they thaw out. If you absolutely must place them in the freezer, have them thaw at room temperature for the best freshness.

Don't Use Old Hot Dog Buns

In the pantry, a hot dog bun will typically last a little less than a week. When it's time to throw it away, it may start to mold and you may notice a very distinct discoloration. Even if it doesn't mold, the buns might become stale. If you keep your buns in a cool and dry place, it'll take longer for them to go bad.

Make sure to keep the small hot dog buns in their original packaging. Do not place them in the fridge because they will go stale and will become harder. However, extremely warm temperatures are also bad for hot dogs. Regardless, when you take the time to choose the right buns and properly store them, you'll have much better hot dogs.
